CIDR Capital Day 2011: October 26

CIDR Capitol Day
October 26, 2011

Linda Thomas, ASID, IIDA
Coalition for Interior Design (CIDR) President

On Wednesday, October 26, we are asking interior design professionals and students to voice their opinions before Michigan’s state legislature. CIDR is organizing A Capitol Day Rally in Lansing to engage the participation of professionals and practitioners, educators, industry members, and students. This is our most concentrated event in garnering the attention and support of the state legislators.

CIDR’s Mission Statement is:
The Coalition for Interior Design Registration is dedicated to defending and protecting the right to practice the interior design profession in Michigan. CIDR has been fulfilling that mission since 1985.

Why is interior design legislation needed for interior designers in Michigan?

1. Anyone in this state can claim to be an interior designer. No training or experience is required. If a designer has little or no awareness about safety issues, it places the public at great risk, and damages the reputation of all interior designers.

2. The restraint of trade targeted against small or single practitioner interior design firms must end. Currently:
· Building officials can reject design documents prepared by interior designers because the IBC recognizes only architects and engineers as “Registered Design Professionals”.
· Building officials require that “submittal documents for deferred submittal items (specified materials) be submitted to the registered design professional in responsible charge to review and to determine general conformance....”

3. Passage of PA319 last year can make it a felony to practice a profession for which one is not licensed or registered.

Did you know?
THIS LAW WILL NOT PUT ANYONE OUT OF BUSINESS!

· You may be grandfathered as a licensed interior designer without having passed the NCIDQ exam if you can document your credentials: a minimum of six years combination of education and/or work experience in providing interior design services with at least two of those six years being practical experience. (You must apply within one year.)
· You may also be grandfathered if you are currently on the State List of Qualified Interior Designers, (even if you are not NCIDQ certified).
· You are exempted from this law if you currently are licensed or registered in a profession that as part of that profession provides interior design services. (For example: architects, engineers, builders.)
· Under the residential and retail exemptions, you may continue to provide interior design services as long as you do not call yourself alicensed interior designer. You may continue to call yourself an interior designer.

So please attend Capitol Day. With everyone’s help, we can achieve valid state recognition for the profession of interior design in Michigan and protect our profession.
